Networked experiments

This project originated from conversations in the Spaces on X with the Portuguese community. We discussed all sorts of topics, giving everyone the opportunity to participate. Over time, the debate began to be structured so that topics wouldn't repeat themselves and some kind of consensus could be reached.

Parlapié reduces participation asymmetry by structuring speaking time and prioritizing previously unheard participants, enabling a more balanced capture of diverse perspectives than traditional open-ended civic discussions.

X Spaces

X Spaces are real-time, audio-based environments within the X platform that enable networked publics to engage in synchronous conversation and discussion. They function as platform-mediated spaces for live, voice-driven interaction, where participation can range from open listening to moderated speaking roles. Social media networks offer a broad and heterogeneous sample of the population, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds, professions, sex and age groups.

Citizen Assembly Adaptation

Parlapié adapts core principles of citizens’ assemblies—such as structured dialogue, equal opportunity to speak, and collective reasoning—to social media environments. Rather than replicating institutional formats, it uses live, moderated discussions to bring together diverse participants and guide conversation through facilitation techniques like time-limited interventions and prioritized speaking turns. This approach enables inclusive, large-scale deliberation in real time, leveraging existing digital networks while maintaining a focus on balanced participation and thoughtful exchange.
